Overview

The Harajuku Omotesando Genki Matsuri Super Yosakoi is a large-scale yosakoi dance festival held each year on a weekend in late August (in recent years around August 29-30) throughout the Harajuku and Omotesando districts of Shibuya Ward, Tokyo. The event brings the yosakoi naruko (clapper) dance, which originated in Kochi Prefecture, into the iconic streetscape of central Tokyo. Dance teams from across Japan perform simultaneously at multiple venues, including a main stage near the Jingu Bridge at the entrance to the Omotesando approach to Meiji Jingu, the area in front of Harajuku Station, and the vicinity of Yoyogi Park. It has established itself as one of the summer festivals that color Tokyo at the height of the season.

As its name "Genki Matsuri" (festival of energy and vitality) suggests, the event aims to revitalize the community and bring energy to people, and it also carries a sense of dedication connected to Meiji Jingu.

History and Origins

The first edition was held in 2001, organized chiefly by the merchants' associations and community groups of Harajuku and Omotesando, making it a relatively new urban yosakoi event. It emerged amid the broader spread of yosakoi to cities nationwide, following the lineage of the original Yosakoi Festival of Kochi (begun in 1954) and the YOSAKOI Soran Festival of Hokkaido (begun in 1992).

Yosakoi is defined by two basic rules: dancers must hold naruko clappers, and each piece must incorporate a phrase of the traditional "Yosakoi Bushi" melody. Beyond that, choreography, costumes, and musical arrangement are left to each team's creativity, making it a highly inventive, participatory form of dance distinct from traditional festivals. Super Yosakoi inherits this freedom and has become one of the stages where leading teams from across the country showcase their skills. As a new festival, edition numbering and venue configuration are adjusted year to year, and finer details depend on each year's official announcements.

Highlights

The greatest highlight is the performance on the main stage set up before the Jingu Bridge at Meiji Jingu. Against the backdrop of the verdant approach, dancers in vivid costumes leap and spin while sounding their naruko, generating a power and festivity scarcely expected in the heart of the city.

In the Omotesando parade, lines of dancers move down the grand avenue accompanied by music from the lead "jikatasha" floats, fostering a sense of unity with the spectators lining the route. Individual performances by each team also unfold in front of Harajuku Station and at the surrounding venues, and the ability to compare diverse teams while moving between multiple venues is a distinctive pleasure of urban yosakoi.
