The Himeji Yukata Festival is one of the major early-summer festivals of Himeji City in Hyogo Prefecture. History and Origins

The origins of the Himeji Yukata Festival are traced to 1742 (Kanpo 2), during the mid-Edo period. According to tradition, when the lord Sakakibara Masamine arranged the relocation and enshrinement rites of Osakabe Shrine, the preparations were carried out so hurriedly that there was no time for formal attire. The townspeople were therefore permitted to attend the ceremony in their everyday yukata rather than in formal dress.

This unusual circumstance, in which yukata became acceptable for a shrine occasion, is said to have given the festival its distinctive character. Over the generations the event grew into a broad civic celebration of summer, while retaining its connection to the example festival (reisai) of Osakabe Shrine, whose enshrined deities include Osakabe Shinno and the legendary spirit Osakabe-hime.
